Click here to submit WRITING to Flashquake

(We also accept ART)

FQ does not accept previously published work.
We DO accept simultaneous submissions, but please consider our calendar in selecting simultaneous submissions to send to us. Generally, we will not send any acceptances until 2 months after the open of the submissions period.

Within the following categories, we are seeking complete works, stories, essays and poems that demonstrate a mastery of the English language, contain original thoughts, demonstrate imagination, and weave their magic with power. We don’t appreciate romance stories, nor work with excessive gore or violence, “goth” vampire tales, hard-core science fiction, rhyming poetry, or works of a religious nature.

FQ has a long tradition of publishing:

  • Flash Fiction (up to 1,000 words)
  • Flash Nonfiction—Essays, Memoir, Stories, Etc (up to 1,000 words)
  • Poetry (up to 35 lines)
  • Prose Poetry (up to 300 words)

FQ also seeks to publish (From the Editor’s Desk section):

  • 10 Minute Plays
  • Haibun (up to 1,000 words)
  • Other forms which could be considered flash (up to 1,000 words)
  • Book Reviews, esp. as they pertain to the flash reader and/or flash writer, including poetry (up to 1,000 words)
  • Author Interviews, especially as they pertain to the flash reader and/or flash writer, including poetry (up to 1,000 words)

In addition, FQ has a special affinity for:

  • Translations, esp. those in which audio and/or video can be obtained from both the original language and the English version

Optional FQ opportunities (upon acceptance of a piece):

  • Audio recordings in MP3 format of the pieces chosen (a link will be added here soon on how to do that using a computer, smart phone, or telephone message service)
  • Video recordings of the pieces chosen (a link will be added here soon on how to do that using a computer, smart phone, or telephone message service)

Each author may submit one of each form per reading period with the exception of the poetry category (3 poems may be submitted). As an example, any author may submit one work of fiction, one work of nonfiction, three poems, one 10 minute play, one haibun, one book review, one author interview, etc per reading period. If you withdraw a submission, you may not resubmit until the next reading period. We consider all submissions final. We will not substitute rewritten submissions for the original.

Provide the following in the Cover Letter section ONLY:

  • Name
  • Email Address
  • Pen Name
  • A short biography written in the third person (up to 100 words)

Submissions are blinded, and as such, DO NOT include identifying information outside of the Cover Letter section of your submission. We will not consider such pieces.

What’s in it for you, the author:

  • Exposure in Flashquake with a worldwide audience
  • A free “contributor’s copy” of the issue in which work appears in the form of a beautiful, multi-media PDF
  • Author may choose to include links to any contact information such as website and/or blog in the author’s bio section

Flashquake seeks the following permissions from our contributors:

  • Permission to include your work in the issue of Flashquake for which it was submitted

Flashquake requires one-time publication rights from the author. Pieces selected for publication will remain on the home page of our website for three months and then be moved to the archives where it will remain indefinitely. We reserve the right to sell said issue, in print form and digital form, through any 3rd party website (i.e. Amazon) regardless of whether the issue is a current issue or archived issue.
