Submit Art

click here to submit ART to Flashquake

(We also accept WRITING)

Flashquake is dedicated to providing a venue for aspiring and established artists. We accept contributions of work in any “fine art” medium — painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, sculpture, mixed media, clay, fiber and glass to name a few. We have no prescribed style and will consider both representational and abstract work.

For each issue we will select two artists to feature. We will consider previously published art as long as the artist has retained the rights.

Artwork MUST be submitted as follows:

(More info at http://blog.magcloud.com/2011/06/02/get-the-most-out-of-your-images/)

  • 300+ DPI at the size it will be published
    • 5.375”w x 7.75”h if portrait orientation
    • 7.25”w x 4.5”h if landscape orientation
  • 12+ images
  • Include ALL information about publication history at the time of submission
  • In JPG or PNG format
  • Title each image in the following format
    • Artist’s Initials_Full Name of Piece
    • Example: CMB_WorkOfArt.jpg
  • Do NOT submit images which are “really dark with low contrast”
  • Do NOT submit images which are sexually explicit or violent
  • Do NOT include identifying information outside the Cover Letter section of Submittable

The artist MUST be able and willing to:

  • Answer an email interview about the artwork, process, influences, etc
  • Record a brief audio in MP3 format on each of the pieces chosen (a link will be added here soon on how to do that using a computer, smart phone, or telephone message service)
  • Acknowledge publication in Flashquake if the work is subsequently published in another venue

Preference MAY be given to those able and willing to:

  • Record 1+ videos (a link will be added here soon on how to do that using a computer, smart phone, or small video camera)

Provide the following in the Cover Letter section ONLY:

  • Name
  • E-mail address
  • Website link, blog link, or both
  • List of works by title, medium and size of work and publication history
  • Specify any work which is “Not For Sale” – NFS. We will assume that the work is available for purchase unless it is specifically labeled NFS. Note: Flashquake does not charge commission for work sold as a result of exposure in the magazine.
  • Artist statement of philosophy (up to 100 words)
  • A short biography written in the third person (up to 100 words)

What’s in it for you, the artist:

  • Exposure in Flashquake with a worldwide audience
  • A free “contributor’s copy” of the issue in which work appears in the form of a beautiful, multi-media PDF
  • Requests about purchasing the artwork are forwarded to the artist
  • Links to the artist’s website and/or blog in the issue in which work appears

Flashquake seeks the following permissions from our artists:

  • Permission to include your work in the issue of Flashquake for which it was accepted

Flashquake requires one-time publication rights from the artist. Artwork selected for publication will remain on the home page of our website for three months and then be moved to the archives where it will remain indefinitely. We reserve the right to sell said issue, in print form and digital form, through any 3rd party website (i.e. Amazon) regardless of whether the issue is a current issue or archived issue.

Cover Image:

Our criteria for the cover art is based on general aesthetic considerations for the issue and does not mean that we regard that submission more highly than other work featured in the rest of the issue. The artwork shown in the image must measure approximately 7.25”w x 8.25”h at 300 DPI and this is up to the artist to provide, upon request (some cropping may be required by the artist to attain these dimensions). The new cover design of FQ includes 3 blocks in which sections of the image will show through, so a small amount of additional cropping will occur. However, a thumbnail of the un-cropped image will also be printed on page 2.

Publication Schedule:

Any submission received after a deadline has passed will be held for consideration for the next issue. Any adjustments to our schedule will be posted on our calendar. Please visit our Calendar page to keep up with our schedule!
