close-up photo of a young girl's laughing face

day tripping
by C. O. McCauley

Published in Mr. McCauley's chapbook, West of Eden.

they took a day off from the cancer
and went to disneyland

just kids
pale as fear
playing with cartoons

free among candies and sodas
and rides that spun and dove and splashed
on a transparent yellow day

no needles to prick giggles
no tubes to drain spirit

just kids warm in the play
with painless smiles

yesterday their tomorrow was today
and today
today was just fine

even god knows how to play that game
