Peony
A white peony sets against a deep thicket of green leaves. The frame forms a tight close up of the flower making the single blossom the focal point. The strong contrast of the white against the dark background also makes the jump out at the viewer.

Dead Red Sunflowers
Done in charcoal, this vase of faded sunflowers relies on dynamic composition for its elegant style. The stems of the faded flowers arch in swan neck like curves from a substantial pillar shaped vase that centered on the page. A strong black line in the background adds weight to left half of the picture to make the image more asymmetrical.

Duckbill
A black vase is set against a light background just left of center in this artful still life. The bill of a duck lays on the table to draw the eye to the right and complete the base of classically triangular composition.

Tulips 1
The leaves of the plant become more important than the flowers in this beautiful charcoal sketch. In fact, the flowers are out of the frame and the background offers a suggestion of grass. The strong dark shadows make the mid-tones of the leaves pop.

Tulips 2
Like Tulips 1, this charcoal sketch emphasizes the leaves of the plant. However a couple of dead head flowers are included within the frame. Again, the deep shadows at the thickest part of the plant allow the leaves to be outlined and makes them pop on the page.

Not in My Name
This graphite image shows a woman with her head wrapped in a beautifully draped scarf reading a brochure on the Walk for Peace. The face and shoulders of the woman are rendered in greater detail than the rest of the image giving real importance to her face. The scarf and features of the face suggest that the woman is of Middle Eastern origins.
