New York Is Book Country

New York Is Book Country

In the red poster
hanging in my library
Lady Liberty
reads a book

the small boats
like minnows
splash about
surprised to find her
ankle deep, wading
in the harbor.

But indeed, why should
she not enjoy a late
summer afternoon off —
tuck her inconvenient
lamp under
one bronze arm,
sip a lemonade,
engage in some
light reading?
