The Given Tree

 The Given Tree by Katherine M. Budris

Abandoned,
no means for growth,
a tiny seed lay,
buried,
two thousand years
before the heavens cracked open
and showered down upon the earth.

Shell parted;
vine crept;
soon rooted in sand,
nourished, and cared for,
bare branches reached out
in all unexpected directions.

With such an awaited birth,
the desert turned
downside up,
and added to creation
a gift of shaded comfort.
Giving replaced neglect,
and with arms wide open
the tree smiled.
