flashquake's "The TRUE Spirit of the Holidays" Nonfiction Holiday Contest

Most of us have indelible holiday memories, stories we will pass on to our children and grandchildren. flashquake's editors invite you to share your most unforgettable holiday stories with our readers, and to give you an incentive to do so, we're offering a $50 prize for the best flash nonfiction with a holiday theme. Any holiday, any culture, any theme is eligible. Humor is welcome, as are pain or pathos.

Rules:

  1. Entries must be under 1000 words. Grammar, punctuation or spelling errors will count against your entry, so BE SURE TO PROOFREAD YOUR ENTRY THOROUGHLY BEFORE SUBMITTING IT!

  2. Entries must be accompanied by a $3 NON-REFUNDABLE entry fee.

  3. We are looking for fresh viewpoints and stories that will move us to laugh, cry, sympathize, feel your pain, share your frustration. Holidays bring out the best and worst in most of us. Can you capture those emotions in 1000 words or less? What do holidays mean to you? Is there a particular holiday you love — or hate — more than others? Why? Have you created new holiday traditions? Have you and your partner or in-laws clashed over methods of celebrating?

  4. Entries will be judged by flashquake's editorial staff. Decisions of the editors will be final.

The contest opens on October 1, 2001 and the deadline for submission is November 1, 2001. The winning entry and up to three entries worthy of honorable mention will be published in the Winter issue of flashquake. Honorable mention authors will receive a CD copy of the Winter issue of flashquake.

An online entry form will be made available from this page when the contest opens. The online entry procedure will involve two steps: 1) electronic payment of your entry fee via PayPal; and 2) electronic submission of your entry via our entry form.

If you choose to enter via land mail and personal check, please prepare your entry double-spaced on one side of 8.5" X 11" sheets. Your entry must be postmarked by November 1, 2001. We prefer that you type your entry using a standard font (e.g., Courier, Arial, Times Roman), since the entries will be scanned and OCRed for electronic transmission to our editors. Please include the title of your piece and the page number on each page, and DO NOT include your name on the piece. DO include a cover page which includes the following information:

  • Your name;
  • The title of your piece;
  • Your e-mail address;
  • Your land mail address;
  • Whether or not your piece has been published elsewhere; and,
