CAST:

BLUE: A soldier in a blue uniform. He has a poor command of English.

GREEN: A soldier in a green uniform. With rifle and full battle kit.

SET:

Without a set the audience has to be enabled to imagine the location, which is a shell hole in the middle of a battle-field.

NOTE: Avoid any representation of specific ethnicity. The uniforms do not need to be the colour specified.

(Curtain up we see Blue sitting in the shell hole.He has been wounded in the leg. Sounds of battle and occasional flashes of light. (Could be done in semi darkness.) Enter Green with typical soldier battle tactics, (ie running short bursts, lying prone.) He jumps into shell hole, is surprised to see Blue. 'Leans' against wall of shell hole, looks at him.)

BLUE: Leg.

(Cautiously Green approaches Blue, looks at leg, cuts away cloth, applies field dressing. They sit in silence for a moment. Blue takes a (blue coloured) pack of cigarettes from top pocket.)

BLUE: Cigarette?

(Green takes cigarette, lights Blue's. They sit in silence smoking. Blue takes a photograph from inside top pocket hands it to Green.)

BLUE: Wife.

(Green takes photo, looks at it carefully, hands it back, takes own photo, hands it to Blue. Blue looks at photo, smiles, presses it to his heart, hands it back. They sit in silence. The nose of battle abates. Green looks up over rim of shell hole. The all clear sounds. Green picks up rifle, points it at Blue.)

BLACKOUT

(Rifle flash).
